Hanuman Who Rejected Butter and Betel Leaves!

When we think of Hanuman, offerings such as butter, betel leaves, and garlands of vadas (fried lentil fritters) often come to mind. However, there exists a unique temple where Hanuman has explicitly stated that he does not desire any of these offerings, yet continues to bless his devotees abundantly. This temple is located in Kollidam, in the Mayiladuthurai district of Tamil Nadu.

In ancient times, Chola kings used to camp in this area temporarily with their armies of elephants and horses. To support the farmers and provide them with food, rest, and shelter, the kings constructed several satras (free inns or rest houses). One such place was the Dharmaraja Satra, which housed kings, ministers, and royal staff.

Wishing to understand the problems faced by the farmers and to offer solutions, the king once invited all of them to the satra for a meeting. As the farmers arrived and began sharing their difficulties and needs with the king, the king noticed a monkey sitting among the crowd, with folded hands in a posture of reverence. Curious, he pointed this out to his minister.

The minister, surprised, inquired how a monkey had entered. One of the locals stood up and said, “We do not see this as an ordinary monkey, but as a guardian deity.” The minister asked skeptically, “So you’re saying you live under the protection of a monkey?”

Another replied, “Not in that way. When we work in the fields, this being stands guard over our belongings. It even helps us by drawing water from the well and filling our pots. It greets every person respectfully with folded hands.”

Impressed by what he heard, the king declared that it was his duty to ensure the monkey was given food three times a day, and he instructed his minister to make the necessary arrangements. From that day, the monkey lived under the royal staff’s care and protection for many years.

As time passed, the monkey grew old. On a Saturday, which also happened to be Ekadashi, it passed away peacefully, still sitting with its hands folded in reverence. When the king was informed, he ordered that the monkey be given due honors in burial. Adorned with garlands and respectfully carried by the villagers chanting “Jai Shri Ram, Veera Anjaneya”, it was buried ceremoniously.

Later, the villagers installed a stone in its memory and began worshiping it as Hanuman. One night, this monkey appeared in the king’s dream and revealed that even in death, it wished to continue protecting righteous people. It requested that a small temple be built for it. Furthermore, it said it did not want offerings like butter, betel leaves, or vada garlands. Instead, it asked for a simple ablution with sandalwood paste made from a local sandalwood tree.

Following this dream, the king built a temple on that very spot. This is how the Kollidam Shanta Anjaneyar Temple came into being.

To this day, butter is not offered to Hanuman in this temple. Neither are garlands of vada or betel leaves used. In front of the temple is a well from which the monkey once drew water. Above this well, a stone idol of Hanuman stands with both hands folded in Vishwaroopa posture, offering a divine darshan.

From there, if one proceeds to the maha mandapam (main hall), one finds the Naga (serpent) shrine, and in the ardha mandapam (anteroom), the Ganapati shrine. In the sanctum sanctorum, Hanuman faces west, standing serenely with folded hands, blessing devotees as Shanta Anjaneya (Peaceful Hanuman).

Devotees testify from their own experiences that offering tender coconut (elaneer) for abhishekam (ritual bathing) to Hanuman and gingelly oil abhishekam to the Naga idol in the mandapam helps remove obstacles in marriage and leads to quick and auspicious unions.

Devotees also believe that if one sits in the maha mandapam and mentally chants “Shri Rama Jayam” 108 times in meditation, all sorrows will be removed and the mind will be filled with peace.

Couples desiring children offer a garland made of poovan bananas to Hanuman and pray earnestly. After the puja, the priest gives bananas from the garland as prasadam to the couple, who eat them while chanting “Shri Rama Jayam.” Devotees believe this vow ensures the blessing of children, and many couples have experienced this grace.

ഹനുമാൻ എന്ന് പറയുമ്പോൾ തന്നെ വെണ്ണ, വെറ്റില, വടമാല എന്നീ വഴിപാടുകളാണ് ഓർമ്മയിൽ വരിക. എന്നാൽ ഈ വഴിപാടുകളൊന്നും തനിക്ക് വേണ്ട എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് ഹനുമാൻ ഭക്തരിൽ അനുഗ്രഹം വർഷിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രമുണ്ട്. തമിഴ്‌നാട്ടിലെ മയിലാടുതുറൈ ജില്ലയിലെ കൊളളിടം എന്ന സ്ഥലത്താണ് നമുക്ക് ഹനുമാൻ ഇത്തരത്തിൽ ദർശനം നൽകുന്നത്.

പണ്ടുകാലത്ത് ചോഴ രാജാക്കന്മാർ തങ്ങളുടെ ആനപ്പട, കുതിരപ്പട എന്നിവയുമായി ഇവിടെ വന്ന് അൽപകാലം തങ്ങുക പതിവായിരുന്നു. അപ്പോൾ കർഷകർക്ക് ഭക്ഷണം കഴിയ്ക്കുവാനും, വിശ്രമിക്കുവാനും, താമസിക്കാനുമായി പല സത്രങ്ങൾ ചോഴരാജാക്കന്മാർ ഇവിടെ പണിതുകൊടുത്തു. അവയിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ധർമ്മരാജസത്രം. ഇതിൽ രാജാക്കന്മാരും, മന്ത്രിമാരും, ജോലിക്കാരും താമസിച്ചിരുന്നു. കൃഷിപ്പണി ചെയ്യുന്ന ജനങ്ങളോട് കൂടിയാലോചിച്ച് അവരുടെ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകൾ മനസിലാക്കി അവയ്ക്ക് പരിഹാരമുണ്ടാക്കാം എന്നു കരുതിയ രാജാവ് ഒരു ദിവസം രാത്രി അവരെയൊക്കെ താൻ താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന സത്രത്തിലേക്ക് ക്ഷണിച്ചു.

എല്ലാവരും രാജാവിന്റെ മുന്നിലെത്തി തങ്ങളുടെ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകളും ആവശ്യങ്ങളും നിരത്താൻ തുടങ്ങി. ആ സമയത്ത് ആ ആൾക്കൂട്ടത്തിന്റെ മധ്യത്തിൽ ഒരു വാനരൻ രണ്ടു കൈയും കൂപ്പി ഇരിക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അത് രാജാവിന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധയിൽ പെട്ടു. രാജാവ് മന്ത്രിയെ വിളിച്ച് അത് ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിച്ചു. ഉടൻതന്നെ മന്ത്രി ഒരു വാനരൻ നിങ്ങളുടെ മധ്യത്തിലിരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട് അത് എങ്ങനെയാണ് ഇവിടെ വന്നത് എന്ന് ആരാഞ്ഞു. കൂട്ടത്തിൽ ഒരാൾ എഴുന്നേറ്റ് തങ്ങൾ ഇതിനെ വാനരമായിട്ടല്ല കാണുന്നത്. കാവൽദൈവമായിട്ടാണ് കാണുന്നത് എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു. അപ്പോൾ നിങ്ങൾ ഒരു വാനരന്റെ സംരക്ഷണത്തിലാണ് ജീവിയ്ക്കുന്നത് എന്നാണോ പറയുന്നത് എന്ന് അല്പ‌ം ഈർഷ്യയോടെ മന്ത്രി ചോദിച്ചു.

അങ്ങനെയല്ല, ഞങ്ങൾ വയലിൽ ഇറങ്ങി ജോലി ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ ഞങ്ങളുടെ സാധനങ്ങൾക്ക് സഹായമായി ഇതാണ് കാവൽ നിൽക്കുന്നത്. ഞങ്ങൾക്ക് സഹായമായി കിണറ്റിൽ നിന്നും വെളളം പോലും കോരി പാനകളിൽ നിറച്ചു വെക്കും. ആരെക്കണ്ടാലും എഴുന്നേറ്റ് നിന്ന് നമസ്ക്കരിച്ചു ബഹുമാനിക്കും എന്ന് ഒരാൾ മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു. ഇതുകേട്ട് സന്തുഷ്‌നായ രാജാവ് ഈ വാനരന് ഇനി മൂന്ന് നേരം ആഹാരം നൽകേണ്ടത് തന്റെ കടമയാണെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് അതിനുവേണ്ട ഏർപ്പാടുകൾ ചെയ്യാൻ മന്ത്രിക്ക് ഉത്തരവിട്ടു. രാജാവിൻ്റെ ഉത്തരവു പ്രകാരം തന്നെ വർഷങ്ങളോളം കൊട്ടാര ഭ്യത്യന്മാരുടെ പരിചരണത്തിൽ ആ വാനരൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു പോന്നു.

കാലം മുന്നോട്ട് പോയി. ആ വാനരന് വാർദ്ധക്യമായി. ഒരു ശനിയാഴ്‌ച ഏകാദശി നാളിൽ ആ വാനരൻ കൈകൂപ്പിക്കൊണ്ടു തന്നെ മൃതിയടഞ്ഞു. ഇക്കാര്യം രാജാവ് അറിഞ്ഞു. വേണ്ട ആദരവോടെ തന്നെ വാനരനെ അടക്കം ചെയ്യാൻ രാജാവ് ഉത്തരവിട്ടു. അതുപ്രകാരം മാല അണിയിച്ച് ബഹുമാനത്തോടെ നാട്ടുകാർ വാനരന് അന്ത്യാഞ്ജലി അർപ്പിച്ച് ‘ജയ്ശ്രീറാം വീര ആഞ്ജനേയാ’ എന്ന് വിളിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അടക്കം ചെയ്തു. പിന്നീട് അവിടെ ഒരു കല്ല് നാട്ടി വെച്ച് അതിനെ ഹനുമാനായി സങ്കല്പ്‌പിച്ച് നാട്ടുകാർ പൂജിച്ചു തുടങ്ങി. അങ്ങനെയിരിക്കെ ഒരു ദിവസം രാജാവിന്റെ സ്വപ്നത്തിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ട ആ വാനരൻ താൻ മരിച്ചാലും സാധുക്കളായ ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് കാവൽക്കാരനായിരിക്കാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നുവെന്നും, തനിക്ക് ഒരു ചെറിയ ക്ഷേത്രം പണിയണമെന്നും വെണ്ണ, വെറ്റിലമാല, വടമാല ഇതൊന്നും തനിക്ക് വേണ്ടെന്നും ഇവിടെയുളള ചന്ദനമരത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഒരു കഷ്‌ണം എടുത്ത് അരച്ച് അഭിഷേകം ചെയ്താൽ മതിയെന്നും പറഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ട് അപ്രത്യക്ഷനായി.

സ്വപ്‌നത്തിൽ നിർദ്ദേശിച്ച പ്രകാരം തന്നെ രാജാവ് അവിടെയൊരു ക്ഷേത്രം പണി കഴിപ്പിച്ചു. അതാണ് കൊളളിടം ശാന്ത ആഞ്ജനേയർ കോവിൽ.
ഇന്നും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഹനുമാന് വെണ്ണ ചാർത്താറില്ല. വട മാലയോ വെറ്റിലമാലയോ അണിയിക്കാറുമില്ല. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു മുന്നിൽ വാനരൻ വെള്ളമെടുത്ത കിണറ്റിനു മീതെ ഇരുകരം കൂപ്പിനിൽക്കുന്ന വിശ്വരൂപ ആഞ്ജനേയൻ ശിലയായി ദർശനം നൽകുന്നു. ഈ ഹനുമാനെ തൊഴുത് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ മഹാമണ്ഡപത്തിലെത്തിയാൽ നാഗസന്നിധിയും, അർദ്ധമണ്ഡപത്തിൽ ഗണപതി സന്നിധിയും കാണാം. ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ പടിഞ്ഞാറു ഭാഗത്തേക്ക് അഭിമുഖമായി കൈകൂപ്പി നിന്ന് ശാന്ത ആഞ്ജനേയൻ അനുഗ്രഹം വർഷിക്കുന്നു.

ചൈതന്യമുളള ശക്തി മൂർത്തിയായ ഈ ഹനുമാന് ഇളനീർ അഭിഷേകവും, മഹാമണ്ഡപത്തിലുളള നാഗർക്ക് നല്ലെണ്ണ അഭിഷേകവും വഴിപാട് നടത്തി പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചാൽ വിവാഹതടസ്സം മാറി പെട്ടെന്ന് വിവാഹം നടക്കുമെന്ന് ഭക്തർ തങ്ങളുടെ അനുഭവത്തിലൂടെ സാക്ഷ്യപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.
മഹാമണ്ഡപത്തിൽ ഇരുന്നുകൊണ്ട് മനസിനുളളിൽ നൂറ്റിയെട്ട് പ്രാവശ്യം ‘ശ്രീരാമജയം’ എന്ന് ജപിച്ച് ധ്യാനം ചെയ്താൽ ദുഃഖങ്ങളെല്ലാം മാറി മനസിന് സ്വസ്ഥത ലഭിക്കുമെന്നും ഭക്തർ തങ്ങളുടെ അനുഭവ സത്യം വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.

സന്താനഭാഗ്യമില്ലാത്ത ദമ്പതിമാർ പൂവൻപഴം കൊണ്ട് മാല തൊടുത്ത് ഹനുമാന് അണിയിച്ച് പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുന്നു. പൂജയ്ക്ക് ശേഷം ആ മാലയിൽ നിന്നും ഓരോ പഴം ദമ്പതികൾക്ക് പൂജാരി പ്രസാദമായി നൽകുന്നു. ‘ശ്രീരാമജയം’ എന്ന് ജപിച്ചു കൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ആ പഴം അവർ ഭക്ഷിയ്ക്കുന്നു. ഈ വഴിപാടുനടത്തി പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചാൽ സന്താനഭാഗ്യം സുനിശ്ചിതം എന്നാണ് ഭക്തവിശ്വാസം. പല ദമ്പതിമാർക്കും ഇങ്ങനെചെയ്ത് സന്താനഭാഗ്യം സിദ്ധിച്ചതായി ഭക്തർ പറയുന്നു.
