Part 13 – The Creation of the Universe

Before creation there was nothing but the Self (Ātman).
Wondering “How shall I create the worlds?  Am I capable?”, the Self discovered the truth: “I am all-knowing.”
Though it possessed neither body nor mind, it was pure, conscious being, able to know and to think.

The first acts of creation

On realising Its own nature, the Self brought forth

the waters above and below,

light, and

death.


Then It created the guardians of the worlds who could preserve these realms.

The making of the first human

Out of the primordial waters the Self shaped a human form and breathed life into it.
From that Primordial Person (Ādi-Puruṣa) arose:

Bodily source Power that emerged Corresponding deity / element

Mouth Speech Fire (Agni)
Nostrils Breath Air (Vāyu)
Eyes Sight Sun (Sūrya)
Ears Hearing Quarters of Space (Dik)
Skin Hair & plants Herbs & Trees
Heart Mind Moon (Candra)
Navel Down-breath Death (Mṛtyu)
Generative organ Life-fluid Waters


These shining powers (devas) are simply diverse rays of one consciousness acting through the senses.

The devas request a dwelling and food

Approaching their creator, the devas cried:
“Give us a place to dwell and food to eat!”

First the Self fashioned the forms of a cow and a horse, but they were rejected.

Finally the Self displayed the human body, which delighted them.
One by one they entered it:

Fire became speech in the mouth,

Air became breath in the nostrils,

the Sun became vision in the eyes, and so on.



Even Hunger and Thirst asked for a place.
The Self blessed them: “Dwell together with the senses and perform your function.”

The search for food (Anna)

After worlds and guardians were set in place, the Self roamed, seeking a cure for their hunger and thirst.
It realised: “Only the Great Food (Anna) can appease them; until food appears, creation is incomplete.”

Because water protects all beings and nourishes the earth, myriad rivers sprang up.
From water the substance of food was shaped—but the food ran away from the Supreme.

How food was finally captured

The hungry primordial Man tried to seize it:

1. With words—yet naming food did not still the hunger.


2. By smell, sight, sound, touch, thought—but none of these satisfied him.


3. Not even the procreative power could quell hunger.



At last, using the lower breath of digestion (Apāna) he grasped the food, consumed it, and was satisfied.
When food became available to every sense, hunger subsided, the powers awakened, and all the devas bowed joyfully to the deity of food.

ഭാഗം 13

പ്രപഞ്ചസൃഷ്ടി

പ്രപഞ്ചസൃഷ്ടിക്കുമുമ്പ് ആത്മാവല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊന്നും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. പ്രപഞ്ചസൃഷ്ടി എങ്ങിനെ നടത്തും തനിക്ക് ഇതിന് കഴിയുമോ എന്ന ചിന്തയിൽ നിന്ന ആത്മാവ് താൻ സർവ്വജ്ഞനാണ് എന്ന സത്യം തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ തുടങ്ങി. ദേഹമോ മനസ്സോ ഇല്ലാത്ത താൻ ചൈതന്യസ്വരൂപനാണ്. തനിക്ക് അറിയുന്നതിനും ചിന്തിക്കുവാനും കഴിയുന്നു. ആ തിരിച്ചറിവ് ഉണ്ടായപ്പോൾ മുകളിലും താഴെയുമുള്ള ജലങ്ങളും, പ്രകാശവും, മരണവും സൃഷ്ടിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.  അനന്തരം അവയെ സംരക്ഷിക്കാൻ സമർത്ഥരായ ലോക പാലന്മാരെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു. അതിനുശേഷം ആത്മാവ് വെള്ളത്തിൽ നിന്നും മനുഷ്യന് രൂപം നൽകി! എന്നിട്ട് അതിലേക്ക് ആത്മാവ് തന്റെ ജീവൻ പകർന്നു! അപ്പോൾ ആദിപുരുഷന്റെ വായ മുളച്ച് അതിൽ നിന്ന് വാക്കും, അഗ്നിയും പുറപ്പെട്ടു. മുളച്ച നാസാരന്ധ്രത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ശ്വാസവും വായുവും, കണ്ണുകളിൽ കാഴ്ചയും സൂര്യനും, ചെവികളിൽ നിന്ന് ശ്രവണവും ദിക്കുകളും, ത്വക്കിൽ നിന്ന് രോമങ്ങളും വൃക്ഷാദികളും ഹൃദയത്തിൽ നിന്ന് മനസ്സും ചന്ദ്രനും പൊക്കിളിൽ നിന്ന് ഉച്ഛ്വാസവും പുറപ്പെട്ടു. അതുപോലെ പ്രജനനേന്ദ്രിയവും അതിൽ നിന്ന് ജന്മകാരണമായ ജീവദ്രവവും ഉരുവെടുത്തു. അങ്ങനെ പലവിധ ഇന്ദ്രിയങ്ങളിലൂടെ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന ആത്മചൈതന്യത്തിന്റെ ഭിന്ന പ്രകാശങ്ങളാണ് ദേവതകൾ. ആ ഇന്ദ്രിയങ്ങളുടെ അധിഷ്ഠാന ദേവതകൾ സംസാരസാഗരത്തിൽ പതിച്ചപ്പോൾ അവർക്ക് വിശപ്പും ദാഹവും നൽകി. അപ്പോൾ അവർ സൃഷ്ടി കർത്താവിനോട് പറഞ്ഞു: “ഞങ്ങൾക്ക് വസിക്കാൻ ഇടവും ഭക്ഷണവും വേണം.”

ദേവതകളുടെ അപേക്ഷക്കനുസരിച്ച് ആത്മാവ് അവർക്കുവേണ്ടി പുരുഷരൂപം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയതു പോലെ പശുവിനെയും കുതിരയെയും ഉണ്ടാക്കി കൊടുത്തു. പക്ഷേ, അതു രണ്ടും അവർ സ്വീകരിച്ചില്ല. എന്താണ് ഒരു ഉപായം ആത്മാവ് ചിന്തിച്ചു. ആ സമയം പുരുഷരൂപം അവർക്ക് കാണിച്ചു കൊടുത്തു. അതവർക്ക് നന്നേ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു. അവർ സന്തുഷ്ടരായിത്തീർന്നു. പിന്നീട് ഓരോരുത്തരായി ആ പുരുഷരൂപത്തിലേക്ക് ഇന്ദ്രിയങ്ങളുടെ രൂപത്തിൽ പ്രവേശിച്ചു. അഗ്നി വാഗിന്ദ്രിയമായി മുഖത്തും വായു പ്രാണനായി മൂക്കിലും സൂര്യൻ ദർശനശക്തിയായി കണ്ണിലും ദിക്കുകൾ ശ്രാതേന്ദ്രിയമായി ചെവികളിലും ഔഷധി-വനസ്തികൾ രോമങ്ങളായി ത്വക്കിലും ചന്ദ്രൻ മനസ്സായിത്തീർന്ന് ഹൃദയത്തിലും മൃത്യു അപാനനായിത്തീർന്ന് നാഭിയിലും വെള്ളം രേതസ്സായി ശിശ്നത്തിലും പ്രവേശിച്ചു. അപ്പോൾ വിശപ്പും ദാഹവും പറഞ്ഞു: “ഞങ്ങൾക്കും ഒരു സ്ഥാനം ഉണ്ടാക്കിത്തരണം.” അത് ഒരപേക്ഷകൂടിയായിരുന്നു. അതിനർഹതപ്പെട്ട വിലയോടെ ആത്മാവ് സ്വീകരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു പറഞ്ഞു: “നിങ്ങൾ ഇന്ദ്രിയങ്ങളോടുകൂടി ചേർന്ന് പ്രവർത്തിക്കുക” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു ആത്മാവ് അവരെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു..

ആത്മാവ് ലോകങ്ങളെയും ലോകപാലന്മാരെയും സൃഷ്ടിച്ചശേഷം അവരുടെ വിശപ്പും ദാഹവും തീർക്കുന്നതിനു വേണ്ടി പരിഹാരമാർഗ്ഗങ്ങൾ തേടി സഞ്ചരിച്ചു. എങ്ങും വിശപ്പിന്റെ വിളി ആഹാരമില്ലാതെ നിലനില്പില്ല! മഹത്തായ അന്നത്തിനുമാത്രമേ പരിഹാരം കാണാനാകൂ. അതുകൊണ്ട് അന്നം കൂടി സൃഷ്ടിച്ചാൽ മാത്രമേ സൃഷ്ടി പൂർത്തിയാകൂ എന്ന് ആത്മാവിന് തിരിച്ചറിവുണ്ടായി. വെള്ളമാണ് സർവ്വപാണികൾക്കും വൃക്ഷലതാദികൾക്കും പരിരക്ഷ നൽകുന്ന വസ്തു. ഭൂമിയെ ഐശ്വര്യസമൃദ്ധിയിലേക്ക് നയിക്കാനും അതിന് കഴിയുന്നു. കാലക്രെമേണ ഭൂമിയിൽ ധാരാളം നദികൾ  ഉത്ഭവിച്ചു. അങ്ങിനെ ജലം കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ  അന്നം സൃഷ്ടിക്കാമെന്ന ആത്മാവിന്റെ അറിവിൽ നിന്ന് രൂപപ്പെട്ട അന്നം പരമാത്മാവിനെ തന്നെ  പിന്തിരിഞ്ഞ് ഓടുവാൻ തുടങ്ങി. അപ്പോൾ വിശന്നിരുന്ന പുരുഷൻ അതിനെ വാക്കുകൾ കൊണ്ട് പിടിക്കാൻ നോക്കി. എന്നാൽ ഭക്ഷണത്തിന്റെ നാമം ഉരുവിട്ടതുകൊണ്ട് വിശപ്പകന്നില്ല. പിന്നെ അവൻ മണത്ത് അതിനെ പിടിക്കാൻ നോക്കി. എന്നാൽ ഭക്ഷണത്തെ മണത്തതുകൊണ്ടും വിശപ്പകന്നില്ല. അതു പോലെ, ഭക്ഷണത്തെ നോക്കിയതുകൊണ്ടോ, അതിന്റെ പേര് കേട്ടതുകൊണ്ടോ, അതിനെ സ്പർശിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടോ, അതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് ഓർത്തതുകൊണ്ടോ വിശപ്പകന്നില്ല. പ്രജനനേന്ദ്രിയങ്ങളുടെ പ്രവർത്തനം കൊണ്ടും വിശപ്പടക്കാനായില്ല. വിശന്നവശനായ പുരുഷൻ ഒടുവിൽ അധപ്രാണനായ ദഹനത്തിന്റെ നിശ്വാസം കൊണ്ട് ഭക്ഷണത്തെ പിടിച്ചെടുത്തപ്പോൾ വിശപ്പകന്നു. അങ്ങനെ ഇന്ദ്രിയങ്ങൾക്കെല്ലാം അന്നം ലഭ്യമായപ്പോൾ വിശപ്പ് അടങ്ങി! ഇന്ദ്രിയങ്ങൾ ഉണർന്നു! ഇന്ദ്രിയദേവതകൾ സന്തോഷത്തോടെ അന്നദേവതയെ വണങ്ങി!!
