ശിവസുതനും ദേവസേനാപതിയുമാണ് സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ. ബ്രാഹ്മണ്യം എന്നത്‌ ശിവനെ കുറിക്കുന്നു. അതിനോട്‌ ശ്രേയസിനെ കുറിക്കുന്ന -സു- എന്ന ഉപസർഗം ചേർത്ത്‌ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യം എന്ന പേരുണ്ടായെന്ന്‌ സ്കന്ദപുരാണം പറയുന്നു.

ശരവണക്കാട്ടിൽ ജനിച്ച കുട്ടിയാണ്‌ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ. ജനനശേഷം മലർന്ന്‌ കിടന്നു കരഞ്ഞ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യനെ അതുവഴിപോയ ആറ്‌ ദിവ്യകൃത്തിമാർ കണ്ടു. അവർ കുഞ്ഞിനെ മുലയൂട്ടനായി തർക്കിച്ചു. അതുകണ്ട കുട്ടി ആറു കൃത്തിമാരെയും മാറിമാറി നോക്കി.അപ്പോൾ കുഞ്ഞിന്‌ ആറ്‌ തലകൾ ഉണ്ടായി; ആറു തലകൾ ഷൺമുഖനെന്ന പേരും നേടിക്കൊടുത്തു.കൃത്തികമാർ മുലകൊടുത്തുവളർത്തിയതിനാൽ ആ കുട്ടി കാർത്തികേയനായി.
